Description

KL Talent Solutions are recruiting on behalf of an established engineering and manufacturing business in Sheffield who are looking to appoint an experienced Machine Shop Manager to join their team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced machining professional with strong leadership skills to take responsibility for the day-to-day management of a busy machine shop, ensuring production targets are achieved whilst maintaining high standards of quality, safety and efficiency.

Working closely with the Plant Manager, you will play a key role in managing production activities, developing the team and driving continuous improvements across the department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, lead and develop a team of CNC machinists, conventional machinists, programmers and support staff.
  • Plan and coordinate daily workloads, production schedules and resources to ensure delivery deadlines are consistently achieved.
  • Monitor production performance, including machine utilisation, downtime, scrap rates and rework.
  • Ensure all machining operations meet required quality standards, including ISO 9001 procedures and first-off inspections.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, reduce waste and streamline manufacturing processes.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance, machine calibration and the availability of tooling, fixtures and materials.
  • Work closely with other departments to resolve production challenges and ensure the smooth flow of work through the business.
  • Support the General Manager in achieving production targets and wider business objectives.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Previous experience in a Machine Shop Manager, Production Manager, Machine Shop Supervisor or similar leadership position.
  • A strong background in machining, with a good understanding of CNC and conventional machining processes.
  • Knowledge of pull boring, conventional turning and milling would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Proven experience managing and developing teams within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong production planning, scheduling and organisational skills.
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP systems.
  • A good understanding of quality control, continuous improvement and health and safety requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the confidence to make decisions in a busy production environment.
  • A proactive, hands-on management style with the ability to motivate teams and drive performance.

About You

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical machining knowledge with the ability to effectively manage people and production.

You'll be comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, balancing competing priorities and ensuring the team has the support, resources and direction needed to meet production demands.

You will be someone who takes ownership, leads by example and is always looking for ways to improve how things are done.

What's on Offer?

This is an opportunity to join an established engineering business where you can make a genuine impact on production performance and operational efficiency.

You'll have the opportunity to lead an experienced team, contribute to business improvements and play an important role in the continued development of the manufacturing operation.
